Modern Warfare (2019) and Warzone Dev Error 6068

Activision names this code but does not publish the wording it prints on screen, so we quote only the code itself: Dev Error 6068. Any site showing you an exact message for it has written one.

Not an outage

People land on this error while searching whether the service is down. It is not. This code cannot be produced by an outage, so no amount of waiting will clear it.

This code is from a game that no longer runs. It has no relationship to any current service status, and we do not pretend otherwise by showing you a live tracker for it.

What it actually means

Dev Error 6068 comes from the Modern Warfare 2019 engine and the original Warzone, known as Caldera. It is a renderer or asset crash on PC, not a connection problem and never an outage.

The important part first: Caldera was shut down on 21 September 2023, and Activision stated there were no plans to relaunch it. This code cannot occur in Black Ops 7, current Warzone or Modern Warfare 4, because the engine that produced it is no longer running anywhere.

The community consensus on its cause was insufficient video memory, a corrupted shader cache, DirectX issues or an overlay injecting into the game. Activision never published a definition, so that remains consensus rather than fact.

How to tell which one you have

If you are hitting a Dev Error in a current Call of Duty, it is not 6068 — check the number again. For any Dev Error, the test is to launch an offline mode with the network cable unplugged. If the crash still happens, it is entirely local: your GPU, your memory or your files. Server status is irrelevant to this whole family of codes.

Fixes, in the order worth trying

  1. First, confirm which game you are in — If this is a current title, the code you are seeing is a different one and the fixes below do not apply.
  2. Lower texture quality and VRAM-heavy settings — The consensus cause was running out of video memory, and texture streaming was the usual trigger.
  3. Delete the shader cache and let it rebuild
  4. Close overlays and tuning utilities — Anything injecting into the process, including capture tools and GPU tuners.
  5. Check Event Viewer for a display driver reset — An nvlddmkm or TDR entry next to the crash confirms the GPU rather than the game.

Operator documentation: support.activision.com. Activision's Warzone known-issues page, dated 21 September 2023, confirms Caldera was taken offline with no plans to relaunch. Archived versions of that page listed several PC Dev Errors as under investigation without ever defining them. Activision has never published a meaning for 6068 specifically.
