GAME/SERVER/STATUS
PlayStation 5 error

PlayStation 5 CE-100028-1

On screen: There is not enough free space on the SSD.

Not an outage

People land on this error while searching whether the service is down. It is not. This code cannot be produced by an outage, so no amount of waiting will clear it.

This is purely local storage and has no connection to service status, so we are not going to show you a live tracker and imply otherwise.

What it actually means

The internal SSD does not have enough free space for what you are installing or updating. Sony's explanation is the on-screen line itself.

This code has no relationship to PlayStation Network. It cannot be produced by an outage, and if you arrived here wondering whether PSN is down, this is not that.

How to tell which one you have

Go to Settings, Storage, System Storage. The number there is the whole diagnosis. PS5 also needs headroom to unpack an update, so a game can fail to update while appearing to fit.

Fixes, in the order worth trying

  1. Check how much space you actually have — Settings, Storage, System Storage. Updates need working room on top of the final size.
  2. Delete from System Storage — Sony's own route: in System Storage, use the select button and then Delete.
  3. Delete from the home screen — Highlight a game, press options, then Delete. Faster for one title.
  4. Move games to USB storage rather than deleting — PS5 games can be moved to an external drive and moved back. PS5 titles cannot be played from USB, but moving them back is far quicker than redownloading.
  5. Saves are not stored with the game — Deleting an installation does not delete your saved data, which is the thing people most fear here.

Operator documentation: www.playstation.com. PS5 code only. Sony's article lists three steps and no cause beyond the message itself.
