Short version: not for the game shipping on 19 November. Here is what each subscription actually gates, why GTA Online made everyone assume otherwise, and why GTA+ is a different thing entirely.
For the game that arrives on 19 November: no. PlayStation Plus and Xbox Game Pass Core exist to gate online multiplayer, and at Take-Two’s annual shareholder meeting on 17 September 2026 chief executive Strauss Zelnick described GTA 6 as launching as a single-player experience, with no recurrent spending anticipated at launch. A single-player campaign has never needed either subscription on either console.
The honest caveat, which most pages on this question skip: Zelnick was answering a shareholder question about monetisation, not issuing a formal statement that no online mode exists. The widely quoted sentence calling GTA 6 “a single-player title” circulates secondhand from a forum transcript of the meeting. The substance is well supported; the exact wording is not something we can verify, and we would rather say so.
| You want to | PS5 | Xbox Series X|S |
|---|---|---|
| Play a single-player campaign | No subscription | No subscription |
| Play paid games online against others | PS Plus Essential or above | Game Pass Core or Ultimate |
| Play free-to-play games online | No subscription | No subscription since 2021 |
| Keep cloud saves | PS Plus Essential or above | Included free on Xbox |
That last row is the one worth knowing even if you never touch multiplayer. On PlayStation, cloud save backup is a PS Plus feature. Without it your only copy of a hundred-hour campaign lives on the console’s drive, and consoles do fail.
The confusion is reasonable, because GTA Online on PS4 and PS5 has required PS Plus for most of its life. Rockstar has waived it during promotional periods, and coverage of those periods regularly gets reported as a permanent change when it was not.
So the precedent cuts both ways: the campaign has never needed a subscription, and the online mode historically has. Whenever a GTA 6 online mode does arrive, expect the requirement to come back with it on both platforms.
Not announced. Take-Two has said it will keep supporting GTA Online after GTA 6 ships and beyond, which is a reasonable signal that the successor is not imminent. Figures of one to two years after launch circulate in coverage, but they are estimates from commentators rather than anything Rockstar has stated.
Practical consequence: if you are buying PS Plus purely for GTA 6, you can wait. There is no announced date to buy ahead of.
These get mixed up constantly and they are unrelated. PS Plus is Sony’s subscription, bought from Sony, which gates online play across all paid games. GTA+ is Rockstar’s own membership, bought from Rockstar, which grants in-game benefits inside GTA Online. Some GTA 6 pre-order listings have been reported to include GTA+ time. That is a Rockstar perk and it does nothing for your console subscription, and vice versa.
If the game will not start on launch day, the cause is far more likely to be the store, the entitlement check or Rockstar’s account services than a missing subscription. We measure those: PSN, Xbox and Rockstar’s own services, every five minutes.

Not for the game launching on 19 November. PS Plus gates online multiplayer, and Take-Two has described GTA 6 as launching as a single-player experience. A campaign has never required PS Plus on any PlayStation. If and when a GTA 6 online mode arrives, expect the requirement to apply to it.
No, on the same reasoning. Game Pass Core covers online multiplayer in paid games. Microsoft also dropped the requirement for free-to-play titles in 2021. A single-player campaign needs neither.
No. Rockstar has never put a mainline Grand Theft Auto into a subscription catalogue at launch, and nothing has been announced here. GTA 6 is a paid purchase.
No, and they do nothing for each other. GTA+ is Rockstar's own membership granting benefits inside GTA Online. PS Plus is Sony's subscription gating online play. Pre-order bundles that include GTA+ time do not include PS Plus.
For the download and for a one-time entitlement check, yes. That is true of every digital console purchase and is not the same as needing a paid subscription. Problems starting the game on launch day are usually the store or account services rather than your subscription status.
Unannounced. Take-Two has said it will continue supporting the existing GTA Online after GTA 6 releases, which suggests the successor is not close. Estimates of one to two years come from commentators, not from Rockstar.
