Activision has published one number and it is for PC: 115 GB, on an SSD, with no HDD option. Console sizes have not been published, and the figures circulating are not from Activision.
| Platform | Size | Source |
|---|---|---|
| PC | 115 GB | Activision, in the official system requirements, on all three tiers |
| Nintendo Switch 2 | ~84.9 GB | Nintendo eShop listing, marked as an estimate subject to change |
| PlayStation 5 | not published | — |
| Xbox Series X|S | not published | — |
An SSD is not a recommendation here. Activision lists SSD required on the minimum, recommended and ray-tracing tiers alike. A mechanical drive is not a supported configuration.
You will also see 130 GB quoted for PS5 in a number of places. That figure traces back to a reader comment underneath a news article. It is not from Activision, from Sony, or from any storefront, and we are not going to reprint it as though it were.
Modern Warfare 4 is not a standalone install. Activision confirmed that the full game remains part of what they call the connected Call of Duty experience, alongside Warzone, and they gave the reason explicitly: shared content helps reduce overall file sizes.
Practically, that means the space you need depends on what you already have. If Warzone or the Call of Duty hub is already installed, Modern Warfare 4 adds less than 115 GB on top. If your drive is empty, it adds more or less all of it. Activision has not published that breakdown, so anyone giving you a precise “extra GB on top of Warzone” figure is estimating.
Worth noting for comparison: Modern Warfare 3 wanted around 149 GB on Steam, and Modern Warfare 2019 climbed towards 200 GB with its updates. At 115 GB this is genuinely smaller than its predecessors, which matches what Activision said they were trying to do.
And then there is the usual footnote on every storefront: additional space may be required for mandatory updates. A day-one patch is near certain. Its size has not been published anywhere, by anyone.
First column is the arithmetic at full line rate. Second is the one to plan against, because consoles and launchers rarely sustain their advertised speed and launch day is the worst possible time to try.
| Your connection | 115 GB | Realistic |
|---|---|---|
| 1 Gbit/s | 15 min | 22 min |
| 500 Mbit/s | 31 min | 44 min |
| 300 Mbit/s | 51 min | 1.2 h |
| 200 Mbit/s | 1.3 h | 1.8 h |
| 100 Mbit/s | 2.6 h | 3.7 h |
| 50 Mbit/s | 5.1 h | 7.3 h |
| 25 Mbit/s | 10 h | 15 h |
| 10 Mbit/s | 26 h | 37 h |
Pre-loading removes this problem entirely, which is why it is worth doing. On PC it opens 15 October at 9am PT.
Two things catch people out. On PC the requirement is an SSD, so freeing up room on a mechanical drive does not help. And on console, deleting Warzone to make space for Modern Warfare 4 may cost you more than it saves, since the two share content.
If the install or update fails rather than being slow, that is a different problem with its own causes — our write-up of disk write errors covers how to read a launcher log and find the exact file that failed.

On PC, 115 GB, and Activision requires an SSD. The Nintendo eShop lists roughly 84.9 GB for Switch 2 as an estimate. Activision has not published sizes for PS5 or Xbox Series X|S.
It is not from Activision or from Sony. It originates in a reader comment under a news article and has been repeated since. No storefront lists a PS5 size.
Yes. Activision lists SSD required on the minimum, recommended and ray-tracing specifications. A hard drive is not a supported configuration.
No. Activision confirmed the full game stays part of the connected Call of Duty experience alongside Warzone, and said shared content reduces overall file sizes. So your real disk cost depends on what is already installed, and Activision has not published that breakdown.
At 115 GB, about two and a half hours at a full 100 Mbit/s and closer to three and three quarters at realistic throughput. On 25 Mbit/s plan for most of a day, or pre-load instead.
