Activision's own wording is midnight local time on 23 October. The campaign, though, opens a week earlier — and that date is the one most people are actually looking for.
| What | When | Who gets it |
|---|---|---|
| Campaign early access | Friday 16 October, PT | Digital pre-order and pre-purchase only |
| DMZ early access | Tuesday 20 October, PT | Digital pre-order and pre-purchase only |
| Full release | Friday 23 October, midnight local time | Everyone |
| Multiplayer and Warzone | 23 October with the full release | Everyone |
So the campaign unlocks a full week before multiplayer. That is the single most useful fact on this page and it is easy to miss, because the headline date everywhere is the 23rd.
One catch worth knowing before you order: a physical copy does not grant early access, and Activision states plainly that it cannot be upgraded to the Vault Edition. Discs ship for the 23rd.
Activision’s PC blog says it directly: the full game releases on 23 October at midnight local time. They used word-for-word the same phrasing for Black Ops 7 in 2025, so this is their standing pattern rather than something specific to this launch.
Midnight local means the game goes live as your own timezone reaches it, rather than everyone being let in at the same instant. New Zealand plays roughly a day before the US west coast.
There is one complication, and we would rather flag it than pretend it away. The US PlayStation Store listing carries a hard timestamp of 04:00 UTC on 23 October, which is midnight Eastern and 9pm Pacific on the 22nd. At the Black Ops 7 launch, third-party reporting described exactly that split: PC opened at one fixed moment while consoles unlocked at local midnight. Activision has published no global UTC moment for Modern Warfare 4, so treat the storefront timestamp as the better guide if you are on PlayStation in the Americas, and midnight local as the official answer everywhere else.
Pre-loading on PC opens 15 October at 9am PT, which Activision confirmed in the same blog, and it is limited to people who have already bought digitally.
Console pre-load dates have not been announced at all. One thing can be said without guessing: they have to open before 16 October, because campaign early access starts that day and nobody can play a game they have not downloaded. For reference, Black Ops 7 opened PC pre-load four days ahead of release.
If you are downloading on the day, the clock stops mattering and your connection starts. The install is 115 GB on PC, which is several hours on a typical line.
Two things historically break at a Call of Duty launch, and neither is the servers going down. The first is login queues under load — that happened in this game’s own beta in August, where players waited for a slot rather than being refused. The second, on PC, is the security requirement: TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot are mandatory, and a machine without them will not launch the game at all.
We read Activision’s own service feed every five minutes, so you can tell a queue apart from an outage: live Call of Duty server status.

Activision says midnight local time on 23 October 2026, which is the same wording they used for Black Ops 7. The US PlayStation Store listing shows a fixed timestamp of 04:00 UTC, equivalent to midnight Eastern, so PlayStation in the Americas may unlock at that moment instead. No global UTC time has been announced.
Friday 16 October, Pacific time, for anyone who pre-ordered or pre-purchased digitally. That is a week before multiplayer. DMZ early access follows on Tuesday 20 October.
No. Activision states that physical editions do not include early access and cannot be upgraded to the Vault Edition. Discs are for the 23rd.
PC pre-loading opens 15 October at 9am PT for digital purchases. Console pre-load dates have not been announced, though they must open before 16 October for campaign early access to work.
Yes, by a week. Campaign early access is 16 October; multiplayer and Warzone arrive with the full release on 23 October.
